Sales Tax FAQ

Last updated: November 15, 2026

Short answers about when Maine sales tax is collected on marketplace orders and where you can see it while checking out.

When is Maine sales tax collected?

Maine sales tax is collected when an order ships to a Maine address. The rate is 5.5%, applied to the item subtotal and to shipping charges (Maine treats shipping on taxable goods as taxable).

What about orders shipping outside Maine?

Orders shipping to other US states are not charged Maine sales tax. If we cross a destination state's economic-nexus threshold in the future, tax for that state will be added automatically at checkout and shown on the same line described below.

What about international orders?

Maine sales tax is not collected on international orders. Duties, VAT, and import fees are the buyer's responsibility and are billed by the carrier on delivery. See the Shipping & Returns page for details.

Where do I see the tax at checkout?

After you enter a shipping address, checkout recalculates and shows a line labeled "Estimated taxes" in the order summary, directly beneath Subtotal and Shipping. The final tax amount is confirmed on the review step and again on your emailed receipt.

Tip: if you don't see the line yet, it's because the address hasn't been entered. Enter the ZIP first and the tax line will appear.

Are digital downloads and subscriptions taxed?

Site subscriptions and digital downloads are billed separately through our subscription provider and are not subject to Maine sales tax under current rules. Physical marketplace goods (flags, merchandise) are taxable as described above.

Tax-exempt buyer?

If you hold a valid Maine resale or exemption certificate, email a copy to bluehockey3@gmail.com before ordering and we'll process a refund of the tax after the order ships.

This FAQ is general information, not tax advice. Rates and rules can change; the amount shown at checkout is the amount actually charged.
